Bond Timber Trophy: Falmouth beat Camborne, Helston lose to Penzance

After their opening game at Helston fell victim to the weather last weekend, Falmouth made up for lost time as they hit 173-7 from their 40 overs before bowling their hosts out for 148.

Adrian Noott, making his first competitive appearance for Falmouth in six years after returning from Truro, got things off to a good start with 48 runs off 97 balls, although fellow returning man Antony Angove departed for a duck.

Harry Roberts added 20 before the quick dismissals of James Williamson (4) and Stefan Churcher (1), before captain Richard Kellow took a hold of the innings with an excellent 52 from 33 balls.

He did much of it alongside Scott Kellow who added 18 to the cause, before Duncan Ayres (11no) and Louis Rudin (7no) added the final runs. Jordan Harvey took 3-44 for Camborne.

Steve Richards looked to be making a promising start in Camborne’s reply, reaching 34 before he was caught and bowled by Richard Kellow.

Simon Hosking added 19 but the swift departures of Chris Gibson, Sam Pooley and Liam Weeks left the hosts at 84-5.

Jordan Harvey’s 18 took Camborne past the century but three further wickets took the score to 114-9, and despite a late rally from Daniel Hocking (12) and Ryan Downing (18), it was not to be as Falmouth sealed victory in the 38th over.

Helston begin their League 1 West campaign with a defeat after losing by five wickets at home to 2019 Premier League champions Penzance.

Helston elected to bat and reached 131 when they were dismissed after 35 overs, with Penzance reaching their target in the 31st over.

Karl Leathley’s 26 got Helston off to a solid start although fellow open Dan Jenkin departed for just three runs.

Mark Jenkin (25) and Ciaran Johnson (25) took the hosts towards the century despite the cheap losses of Guy Leathley (3) and Ross Leathley (0).

Steve Jenkin added a very useful 30 not out but a batting collapse saw William Eva, Benjamin Rogers and Steve Eddy all depart for ducks after facing a total of seven balls.

Bradley Bury came in and added five alongside Jenkin as Helston were dismissed for 131.

Matthew Lawrence took two of those quick wickets in his impressive haul of 4-15, while Greg Smith took 3-28.

Penzance’s reply did not get off to the ideal start as Thomas Wells recorded just nine before being bowled by Bury, with third batsman Kameron Collins lasting four balls and scoring zero runs before he was also bowled, this time by captain Steve Jenkin.

Jack Paull’s 11 was the highest score among the first four batsman after Christian Purchase managed a solitary run as Penzance reached 30-4.

But captain Greg Smith led by example with 40 not out, while Tommy Sturgess added 22 to the cause before he was bowled by Dan Jenkin, who he had earlier bowled out himself.

But Charles Goldsworthy stepped in and took Penzance to victory alongside Smith, scoring 39 not out as the win was secured after 30.2 overs.

Redruth recorded a narrow three-run victory at St Just in Saturday's other League 1 West match.

The visitors managed 161 before being bowled out in the 39th over of their innings, but in an exciting finale and with St Just only four runs shy of the winning line, Redruth dismissed their hosts with only three balls remaining.

Sam Wyatt led from the front with a fine 70, which included nine boundaries and one six, but witnessed the dismissals of six of his team-mates alongside him for a total of just eight runs.

Craig Williams came in at eight and hit a superb 64 to steer the visitors back on track before being dismissed for 161 after 38.3 overs.

Ben Stevens was on form for St Just, taking 4-25 with the ball.

Aided by a 45 not out from Somerset man Lewis Goldsworthy and respectable hauls from Steve Kevern (21), Neil Curnow (22), Ben Ellis (18) and Thomas Stephan (16), the hosts chipped away at Redruth’s target and neared the winning line.

They were seven runs from victory when final batsman Neil Stanleick came in alongside Goldsworthy but could only manage three before Stanleick was caught and bowled by Johnson to hand victory to the visitors.

That was Redruth’s second win of the season after they opened their account with an eight-wicket win at home to local rivals Camborne in their rearranged game on Wednesday evening.

Camborne were dismissed for just 67 after 19.2 overs with Redruth meeting their target in the 13th over.

Opener Steve Richards made one of only two double figure returns from his side’s innings, scoring ten off ten balls before he was dismissed.

Only Liam Weeks (17) could top that score with all other batsmen recording five or fewer runs as the visitors were bowled out in the 20th over. Dylan Caddy took 3-15 for Redruth.

Redruth required only four batsmen in the reply as Sam Wyatt fell for 4 early on before his replacement James Harrison recorded the same score before he was dismissed.

But Luke Johnson (19 not out) stepped in and put a 56-run stand on alongside Toby Whiteford, whose 37 not out saw the home side ease towards the winning line.

Truro made it two defeats from two League 1 East games as they slipped to a heavy 158 run defeat at home to 2018 Premier League champions Werrington.

Werrington racked up an impressive 230 from their 40 overs for the loss of nine wickets, before bowling out their hosts for just 72 in the 27th over.

It means Truro have already got a lot of work to do if they are to reach the semi-finals, with only the top two from each group advancing.

Adam Hodgson was the star for the away side, scoring 108 runs off 110 balls including 14 boundaries.

His side was at 206 by the time he was eventually bowled by Kyle Van Rooyen, with supporting scores from Adam Jenkin (14), Matthew Robins (21), Ben Smeeth (15) and Nick Lawson (26) leaving the hosts with it all to do in their reply.

Charlie Kent managed 17 before he was caught by Lawson with the score at 25-1, but a batting collapse saw the next eight wickets fall for just 24 more runs.

With the score at 49-9, final batting pair of David Krohn (7) and Joel Brierley (17no) faced a near impossible task, with the duo adding another 32 runs before the inevitable was confirmed.

Penzance welcome St Just in their rearranged local derby on Sunday.
