TRURO City’s march to the Southern League Premier South title continued as Paul Wotton’s men move a point clear at the top of the table after a 1-1 draw with Taunton Town at Treyew Road, writes Cameron Weldon.

Shane White headed the Somerset side in front in the first half before a fantastic strike from Tyler Harvey levelled the scores in Cornwall, earning his side a share of the points.

Fresh off the back of three straight league wins Truro faced a Taunton side without a win in three matches in the windy Cornish conditions.

Taunton took the lead inside the opening ten minutes as two former Truro men combined. Ryan Brett sent in a free kick to the back post where Shane White was lurking to head home past Truro keeper George Shelvey to break the deadlock.

Truro looked for a reaction, first with Harvey and then debutant Kieran Hayes as the pair saw their attempts saved.

Alex Battle then saw a glorious opportunity to equalise go begging. The midfielder was expertly played through by Harvey but sliced his shot wide of Taunton keeper Irish’s far post.

Taunton dominated the majority of the first half but failed to really test Shelvey since the goal.

The league leaders started the second half the far better of the two teams and drew level just past the hour mark. Top scorer Harvey struck his 20th goal of the campaign in all competitions in as many games to equalise. The striker turned his man before firing low past Irish to deservedly claw his team level.

New loan signing Kieran Hayes, who joined from Nottingham Forest, nearly had a debut to remember as he drove into the visitors’ box but his across goal effort was well cleared off the line by another former City man in Nick Grimes.

Up the other end Taunton had two glorious chances go to waste. First Jamie Short was found unmarked at the back post but hit his shot high and wide. Jamie Price then must have thought he’d won it for his side as the full back drilled a shot that was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by a full stretched Shelvey.

Harvey then saw two shots pushed away by Irish as the game ended in a draw.

With second in the table Chesham United losing 1-2 at home to Hartley Wintney, Truro now move a point clear of their title rivals with two important games in hand.

Truro are next in action on Saturday as they welcome Salisbury to Cornwall.
