KIAN Thomas scored twice as Wendron United strolled to a comfortable four-goal win at home to Callington Town.

Playing their first game in more than a month, Thomas opened the scoring inside seven minutes before Jack Noy doubled the lead on the half-hour.

Jack Stocker made it three less than two minutes later, before Thomas bagged his second and his side’s fourth shortly before half-time.

Wendron made an excellent start to the game, taking the lead in the seventh minute thanks to a fine goal from Thomas. The young forward, unmarked on the right-hand side of the box, did well to chest a long pass down before drilling it across goal and inside the far post.

A good chance to respond went begging for the visitors soon after, with Andre Rodukov escaping down the right flank and teeing up Ben Mackiver-Redwood, but his near-post flick was smothered by Dan Stedman.

The hosts went back on the attack and controlled the remainder of the half, with their efforts being quickly rewarded by a fine team goal in the 29th minute. Noy started the move with a throw-in, which, via Ben Ringrose, reached Stocker in the box, who held it up and laid off for the onrushing Noy to fire home.

Two became three in the next attack, with the home side steaming forward and the ball working its way to Stocker inside the area, who slipped past the last defender before rolling it past goalkeeper Brice Shields to extend the lead.

A couple of chances for a fourth passed by but it soon arrived, with Thomas doubling his tally with a cheeky finish in the 42nd minute. Joe Chapman surged to the byline and fired in a low cross to the near post, where Thomas was lurking to backheel the ball over the line.

The home side were searching for a fifth before the break but almost let one in at the other end, with Lee Robinson’s shot taking a deflection and striking the upright.

Callington came out quickly in the second half and missed a good chance early on when a cross found Tommy Norton at the back post, but the midfielder placed his effort well over Stedman’s goal.

Wendron were still sniffing a fifth and Thomas was looking to complete his hat-trick, only to be denied twice in quick succession. First, the youngster curled a fine shot into the side netting from 20 yards, before Noy’s low cross was taken off his toes by John Wyatt just as he was set to tap the ball home.

An even better chance arrived midway through the half, with Thomas doing well to take the ball past the onrushing Shields but could not keep his composure and keep his shot on target.

Callington should have managed a consolation strike with 12 minutes to play, with Ben Mackiver-Redwood racing in and knocking the ball past Stedman for substitute Billy Coton to tap in, but his shot was brilliantly blocked on the line by fellow sub Max Bowden.

Wendron also had Stedman to thank for the clean sheet, with the goalkeeper producing a fine diving save to deny Mackiver-Redwood’s point-blank header in stoppage time.
