FALMOUTH Town striker Matt Buchan has returned to former club Helston Athletic.

Buchan left the Blues for Bickland Park in 2018, scoring 31 goals in 61 games for Andrew Westgarth's side over the last two years, but has opted to begin a second spell at Helston, who are top of the South West Peninsula League Premier West.

The former Cornwall under-18s player, who was part of Town's Cornwall Senior Cup-winning side in 2019, has scored 12 goals in 22 games this season, including a hat-trick in Town's 7-1 win at Launceston in August.

He also scored twice for Falmouth in their 5-1 thrashing of the Blues in the FA Vase first round proper in October, as well as Town's consolation in their 2-1 defeat at home to Helston in the league in September.

Buchan is the second striker to depart Town in recent weeks, with Jack Bowyer leaving to join St Austell earlier this year.

"I'm delighted that he's going to come back and be a Blue again," Helston manager Steve Massey said.

"He's big, strong, he's brave. I thought he caused us problems, certainly in both of the games at our place. I thought he was quiet at their place but certainly the games that we played against them at home in the Vase and the league game he caused us problems."

Falmouth Town manager Andrew Westgarth said: "I’m disappointed to lose Mattie, I don’t like to see any player leave the club. He had his reasons and I wish him all the best."

Buchan made his second debut for the Blues in Saturday's 3-0 win at Launceston, replacing Billy Tucker in the second half.
