Helston Athletic lead the way in the South West Peninsula League Premier West as the season enters its final third, with plenty to play for at both ends of the division.

The Packet has taken a look at some of the statistics behind the league table.

Thanks largely to cup runs and postponements, there is usually a disparity in the number of games teams have played in the South West Peninsula League, and indeed other divisions at this level, meaning a team's true standing may be different to the league position they currently occupy.

To make up for this, and to save waiting until the final table at the end of the season, a points-per-game league table, shown below, can instead offer a truer indication of how a team is performing.

Falmouth Packet: Falmouth Packet:

As you can see, league leaders Helston Athletic are still top of the pile, with Saltash United leapfrogging St Austell into second spot.

Falmouth Town move above Newquay into sixth, with Dobwalls moving into eighth ahead of Camelford, while Porthleven claim the final spot in the top ten at the expense of Liskeard Athletic.

St Blazey drop two places below Wendron United and Launceston into 14th, while the bottom six – Wadebridge Town, Callington Town, Penzance, Sticker, St Dennis and Godolphin Atlantic – all remain in the same order.

Falmouth Packet:

Second-placed Saltash United lead the way in the goalscoring stakes. The Ashes have netted a whopping 102 goals in 20 games, with their average of 5.1 per game putting them well clear of Helston Athletic, who come in at a still very impressive 4.0 per game. Falmouth Town's 3.04 goals per game puts them in the top four.

Penzance and Godolphin Atlantic are the only two teams to have scored an average of less than one goal per game, with the Magpies' 0.95 just edging out the G's 0.88.

Falmouth Packet:

If you want to see a goal, then watch Saltash. Thanks to their superb goal tally, they also lead the way in the total goals per game race (goals scored and conceded).

There have been 118 goals in the Ashes' 20 games, an average of 5.9 per game. Sticker are second with their combined 130 goals (scored 35, conceded 95) from 24 games giving them a score of 5.42 per game, while Dobwalls' 5.2 per game puts them third with 104 goals in 20 games (scored 50, conceded 54).

Porthleven are at the bottom of the table with 3.58 per game – which emphasises just how many goals have been scored this season – with 68 goals from their 19 games (scored 33, conceded 35).

Falmouth Packet:

If you want to see a goal, then go to Saltash's Kimberley Stadium. Unsurprisingly, the Ashes' ground is the place to be if you want to see goals, with an average of 6.27 goals flying in per game (69 goals in 11 games).

Dobwalls' Lantoom Park just squeezes into second place ahead of Helston's Kellaway Park, with their 5.43 per game (38 from 7) edging out the Blues 5.42 per game (65 from 12). Falmouth's Bickland Park comes in at fourth with 5.33 per game (48 from 9).

Porthleven's Gala Parc ranks bottom with 3.33 goals per game (30 from 9), with St Blazey's Blaise Park (3.67) and Penzance's Penlee Park (3.7) also in the lower reaches.

Falmouth Packet:

On the topic of home grounds, Saltash are also the team with the best home record this season. It is mighty close, however, with the Ashes and Helston both on 33 points, but Saltash do have a superior goal difference and have accrued those points in one less game than Steve Massey's Blues.

St Dennis' five points from 11 games at their Boscawen Park home puts them bottom, but Godolphin have managed just one more point in three more games.

Falmouth Packet:

Helston have a perfect away record, winning all 11 of their games away from Kellaway Park, but they are not quite top of the away table as St Austell have taken one more point in two more games.

Both sides are well ahead of the rest, with Mousehole nine points back in third. Falmouth are fourth with 23 points from 13 away games, with Saltash in fifth with 22 from nine.

Callington Town have taken the fewest points on the road, managing four from 11 games. Penzance have taken six from 12 games, with Godolphin Atlantic and Sticker on eight and nine respectively.

Falmouth Packet:

Helston's ongoing record-breaking run of 21 consecutive league wins is miles better than any other side, with Bodmin Town and Saltash's in a distant joint-second with a best run of eight wins.

Camelford are fourth with their five-game winning run, while Falmouth, Mousehole, Newquay, St Austell and Wadebridge Town have all won four in a row.

Falmouth Packet:

Sticker have the unwanted honour of having the longest losing streak, with their nine-game run just surpassing Godolphin and Liskeard Athletic's respective eight-game losing runs.

Penzance and St Dennis have lost seven in a row, while St Blazey have lost five.

Falmouth Packet:

Two hundred and twenty-eight of the 380 scheduled games have now been played, with 200 resulting in victories and 28 ending all square.

Those 200 wins are almost perfectly split between home and away wins, with the home side coming out victorious on 101 occasions and the visitors winning the other 99 times.

There have been 1044 goals across those 228 games, an average of 4.8 goals per game. The hosts have scored 553 and the away side have netted 491.
