Falmouth Town will take on local rivals Helston Athletic for the fourth time this season on Saturday, as Town make the trip to Kellaway Park for their South West Peninsula League Premier West game (kick-off 3pm).

Helston go into the game as league leaders, after their 4-2 win at Bodmin Town on Saturday put them two points clear of previous leaders St Austell.

The Blues’ win at Priory Park on Saturday was their 17th league win in succession, as Steve Massey’s side continued to extend their club record run.

Their sole league defeat in 19 games this season came back on August 17 at home to Liskeard Athletic, while their only other two defeats in their 26 matches this season have come at the hands of Andrew Westgarth’s Falmouth.

Town ended Helston’s 13-game winning run in style in October when they won 5-1 at Kellaway Park in their FA Vase first round proper tie. Helston have won nine out of 11 games since that drubbing, following a 2-1 defeat at Saltash United in the Walter C Parson League Cup on Wednesday night.

The only other blemish in that run came at Bickland Park in November, when David Broglino’s hat-trick sealed a 3-2 victory in the Cornwall Senior Cup third round.

The Blues did enjoy a 2-1 win at Town in the reverse league fixture in September, with Mark Goldsworthy and Kai Cornish scoring in either half.

Despite their excellent recent record over their rivals, Westgarth is well aware of the challenge that his side will face on Saturday.

“It’s a good time to play them,” he said. “They’re on a backlog of games, it’s a big month for them. Both teams are doing well so it’s all gearing up to be another spicy game for sure.

“You could look at it one of two ways. We could upset them and break their unbeaten record or they could gain a bit of revenge on us, it could go one of two ways.

"I’m sure they’ll be more fearful of us because we’ve got the better of them in the last two games, but they’ve got players in form at the minute. Goldie [Goldsworthy] is in the form of his life, [Billy] Tucker seems to be scoring goals at the minute, but we’re the same, we’ve got boys that are firing.”

Westgarth is expected to have a full complement of players to choose from besides right-back David Blizzard, who is unavailable for the next few weeks.
