Cornish rugby player Luke Cowan-Dickie enjoyed a try-scoring Rugby World Cup debut on Sunday.

Exeter Chiefs forward Cowan-Dickie came off the bench to score England's all-important bonus-point sealing try in the 76th minute of their 35-3 win in their Pool C opener against Tonga in Japan.

Cowan-Dickie's Chiefs team-mate and fellow Cornishman, Jack Nowell, missed the game due to injury.

Cornish Pirates forward Sam Matavesi made his own Rugby World Cup debut at the weekend, featuring for Fiji in their defeat to Australia.

Camborne-born Matavesi, who works for the Royal Navy out of RNAS Culdrose, played 74 minutes for the Flying Fijians as they lost 39-21 to the two-time world champions.

Sam's brother Josh, who plays for Newcastle Falcons and was also born in Camborne, did not make the squad for the match.
