Helston Athletic welcome Wendron United to Kellaway Park for the first time in more than eight years tomorrow night, as the two teams do battle in the South West Peninsula League Premier West (kick-off 7.30pm).

The last time the teams met was in the 2010/11 Combination League, with Helston running out 6-0 winners in April 2011 on their way to winning the title that year with 101 points.

Despite Wendron's status as a newly-promoted side and likely underdogs for tonight's game, they currently sit above Helston after picking up four points from their first two games.

The Dron came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Penzance in their opener, before winning 2-0 at Launceston on Saturday – their first-ever at SWPL Premier-level.

Helston sit one point further back after winning 2-0 at Newquay in their first game, before suffering a 2-1 defeat at Liskeard on Saturday.

Wendron manager Jack Greenwood said: "They've come off the back of a defeat, it's a local derby, they've got a very good squad and a lot of experienced players so we know it's a very tough game, but we're just going to enjoy it."

Helston winger Cameron Wheat could be set to make his home debut against the side he left to join the Blues in the summer.

Wheat, who was an unused sub in Saturday's defeat to Liskeard, left Wendron in June after playing a starring role in the club's superb Division 1 West and Cornwall Senior Cup campaign.

"I'll be surprised if [Helston boss Steve] Massey doesn't start him against us," Greenwood said. "From our point of view it'll be good to see him and good to have him up against us. We know what he can do so we'll be well aware of that threat and I'm sure he'll be fired right up for it more so than normal."

Town face familiar foe

Falmouth Town will face St Austell for the ninth time inside two years tonight, when Town make the trip to Poltair Park (kick-off 7.30pm).

Town have taken on the Lillywhites eight times since the start of the 2017/18 season, meeting four times in the SWPL Premier, twice in the League Cup, and twice in the Cornwall Senior Cup.

Falmouth triumphed on five of those occasions, with their 4-1 victory in the Senior Cup semi-final in March a particular highlight, as Town went on to lift the famous trophy the following month.

St Austell won two of the other three meetings, including a Senior Cup quarter-final win in 2018, while the teams played out a remarkable 5-5 draw in October 2017.

Fortune favours the Lillywhites so far this season, however, with St Austell topping the table after earning three wins from their three matches so far.

The Lillywhites began the campaign with a 6-1 hammering of Liskeard Athletic, before winning 6-0 at Penzance.

They were made to work for their third win on Saturday, however, eking out a 2-0 win at home to Porthleven.

Falmouth on the other hand are yet to win this season, with a hard-earned goalless draw at home to Mousehole being followed up by a disappointing 2-2 draw at St Dennis.

Tonight’s match was originally due to take place at Bickland Park, but was switched as a result of visibility issues, with Town’s floodlights due to be fixed at the end of the month.

Town have no fresh injuries or unavailability ahead of the game.

Seagulls flock to Fishermen

Porthleven are also in action tonight, with Mousehole making the short trip to Gala Parc (ko 7.30pm).

The Seagulls are unbeaten in three games so far this season, while the Fishermen have picked up four points from their three matches.

Port edged a 3-2 win at home when they met in Division 1 West last season, but Mousehole won 6-0 in the reverse fixture.

  • A round-up of all of the midweek action will be on The Packet website on Thursday.
