CHARD Mixed A have clinched the Yeovil and District Summer League Division One title for the first time in the history of the club.

Chard finished the season with 124 points, eight clear of Sherborne, who have been holders for many previous seasons.

The title went down the final game of the season when Chard had to travel to Sherborne in need of just 3 points in order to be champions.

The weather seemed to be favouring a Chard victory as only eight games were played before the rain settled in meaning the match was called off as a draw (5-5).

Captaining the team this summer was Harry Gawen who feels that his team, including Sue Key, Jackie Gage, Gill Dunn and Matt Bamber, played some fantastic tennis and the title was reward for their effort and commitment.

Chard won 12 of the 14 games and in nine of these 12 wins Chard took maximum points off their rivals. The pivotal game of the season was at home to Sherborne when Chard won 10-2.

That was Sherborne’s only defeat of the season. This result hauled Chard to top of the table where they stayed for the rest of the season.

■ CHARD Tennis club are now looking forward to the winter league which starts in rwo week’s time. New members are most, club nights are on Wednesday evening from 7pm.
