TAUNTON’S Intermediate Cup dreams were shattered at Priory Park, 20 years ago this week, as Hertford triumphed 20-13 in front of a bumper crowd.

There was great anticipation for the sixth round tie, heightened only by its postponement from the previous week due to a waterlogged pitch, but the visitors from London denied Taunton a place in the quarter-finals.

Hertford dominated up front, bossing the scrum and lineout, but it was the home side who took the lead, as winger Mark Laver went over in the corner.

Graham Davies missed the conversion but nailed a penalty, before Hertford's Andy Braid replied in kind to make it 8-3 at half-time.

Within a minute of the restart, the game was turned on its head; Taunton flanker Mike Stevens was sin-binned and Paul Sharpner barged over, with Braid’s conversion putting Hertford 10-8 ahead.

Richard Justice added a second try for the visitors, but Neil Jones replied for the home side to pull it back to 15-13.

Ultimately the match was decided when a Taunton lineout sailed over the top, and Hertford's Dave Hesketh couldn't believe his luck... strolling over the line to seal the victory for his side.
