BRIDGWATER Town Football Club is joining forces with Yeovil United FC to undertake 50 marathons in 24 hours, with the aim of raising funds for three local charities.

Both clubs are owned by Adam Murry, the former co-owner of AFC Bournemouth, who rescued Yeovil Town Ladies (as they were then known) from financial collapse in July 2019.

He has now taken over at Bridgwater Town, too, and yesterday it was announced that a deal had been agreed to purchase Fairfax Park from Sedgemoor District Council.

The ban on grassroots football fixtures and training during the national lockdown means that neither Bridgwater Town nor Yeovil United’s players can currently compete or train together, but that will not prevent them from taking on a challenge to help those who need it most.

A Bridgwater Town statement said: “In what are such very difficult times for many families in our local area, the town’s two biggest football clubs are coming together in this time of need.

“Bridgwater Town Football Club and Yeovil United Football Club are joining forces to raise much needed funds and awareness for local charities within the Bridgwater area.

“The ‘United For Bridgwater’ campaign is a joint mission to support the local community, with a target to raise £10,000 through both club’s ‘50 For Bridgy’ event - 50 marathons in a day for the town.

“With both men’s and women’s football suspended until at least the middle of February, each club’s senior squad and management - including CEO Adam Murry and Bridgwater chairman Bob Buckingham - will be taking on this gruelling challenge.

“Each player will take to the streets of their local area to complete the 26.2 miles by foot, in no more than 24 hours, on Saturday, February 6, 2021.

“All money raised will stay in the town and go to such worthy causes who provide incredible support to the most vulnerable in our society.

“The funds raised will go to support organisations such as Bridgwater Foodbank and other deserving charities.

“We ask followers of both clubs and the wider community to back our campaign and help us serve our community.

“Two clubs, one goal, United for Bridgwater.”

As well as Bridgwater Foodbank, the other charities which are to benefit from the campaign are Brainwave (which supports children with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, and has a base in Bridgwater) and The Gift of Giving Shoebox Appeal (which helps local families and individuals facing financial hardship).
