THE Weekly News is asking clubs around the Burnham & Highbridge area for their ‘club heroes’ - members who have been working for the NHS or essential services during this incredibly tough time, or those who go above and beyond for grassroots sport.

This week, we hear from Burnham United AFC’s ladies section, with several of their players fulfilling key roles at this time of coronavirus lockdown.

Jess Wright and Chloe Collins are both working for the NHS, with Collins in the ITU and Covid-19 wards.

Chelsea Organ has started working for Brunel Care specifically during the lockdown to help out, while Cori Martin works with autistic adults.

Kelly Brueford is working at Towans Care Home on Berrow Road, and Emily Moreton is still working in her school as a teaching assistant, so key workers’ children can attend.

Daisy Goldsmith is a volunteer with the Wessex 4x4 Response team.

Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News:

BURNHAM United's Under-8 team have kept busy while not being able to train together.

On Saturday, May 16, the players ran a combined 26.2-mile marathon between the squad.

Sixteen players ran a minimum of one mile each, with one player running just under four miles.

The overall time added together was five hours, 24 minutes and 31 seconds.

Team manager Ashley Massingham said: “The emphasis was on completing the marathon as a team, with parents providing me with regular updates across the day when each player had completed their distance/ time.

“A fantastic achievement by the players and I’m so pleased with their efforts.”

The team are still looking for a sponsor for 2020/21 season - anyone interested in sponsoring them should get in touch via ashmass89@outlook.com.
