Middlezoy Rovers 0, Mendip Broadwalk 1

MIDDLEZOY’S run of tough games continued on Saturday, as they hosted in-form Mendip Broadwalk and went down to the only goal of the game.

The game started at a high pace and Zoy should have gone in front when a ball over the top sent Adam Long through on goal and Zoy found themselves three on one.

Long went for goal, when he could have perhaps found a team-mate, and saw his effort go wide of the post.

The home defence were keeping Mendip’s lively front three quiet but the visitors were the next to have a chance, as their winger was found unmarked at the back post but couldn’t direct his header goalwards.

In a very end-to-end half, it was then Zoy’s turn to go close as Dan Luce broke into the box but, just as he looked like he was about to get his shot away, a team-mate nipped in to take it off him and shot over.

The second half was much the same as the first and, with the game very open, it looked like only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken.

It was Mendip who struck first, as a poor ball out from the back allowed the visitors to break with Zoy out of position.

Winger Jacob O’Donnell broke into the box before cutting back onto his left foot and drilling past goalkeeper Greg Turner in the 65th minute.

With Zoy now having to chase the game it could have got worse as Mendip saw a goal chalked off for offside and another effort cleared off the line.

In the closing stages it looked as though Zoy were going to grab a late equaliser as a succession of corners were causing issues in the Mendip box.

Very good chances fell to both Luke Taylor and Jed Williams but both failed to work the keeper, and Mendip managed to hold on for the win.

Man of the match: Lee Graham

Middlezoy remain second in the Premier Division table despite that defeat, although they have played more games than all the teams chasing them.

They will aim to bounce back away to 12th-placed Nailsea United this coming Saturday (2pm).

MIDDLEZOY Rovers Ladies progressed to the semi-finals of the Somerset FA Women’s Senior Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday, dispatching Weston-super-Mare 10-0.

Megan Hill, Georgia Coles, Chloe Snook, Ellie Orritt, Chelsea Day and Lucy Major all found the net in the rout.

Only one other quarter-final was able to take place, with Keynsham Town beating Brislington 6-1.

That means Middlezoy could play Keynsham, Ilminster Town/Yeovil Town or Larkhall Athletic/Keynsham Town Development in the semi-finals.

Before that, Zoy return to league action this coming Sunday, as they host Bishops Lydeard (2pm).

Zoy lost 4-3 away to Lydeard just two weeks ago, and a revenge victory would take the hosts within a point of their opponents in the South West Women’s League Premier table.
