CRICKET: Burnham-on-Sea defeat Bridgwater Thirds

BURNHAM kept alive their faint hopes of avoiding relegation with an emphatic home victory on Saturday.

Put in to bat, the Burnham top order was in fine form.

After losing Dave Worthington early on, Brad House (55) and Rob Driver added 90 for the second wicket.

Driver was joined by Pete Harris and the pair added another 126, until the former was run out for a fine 85.

Harris was eventually out for 58 as the late pursuit of runs also produced a flurry of wickets which took Burnham to 247-7.

Pick of the Bridgwater attack was Tilly Bond, who kept it tight at the end of the innings, picking up 3-42 off 9 overs.

Bridgwater replied in cautious mood as Driver and Connor Lefrere kept it tight.

Tim Netto was the first to fall, becoming Lefrere’s only victim, with 18 on the board but, at 96-2, the visitors were well set for an assault on Burnham’s total.

Rhys Hayward made his way to a fine half-century which included 10 fours, but Ollie Farnham came on to snap him up for 52 and then trapped Dominic Court lbw for 11 to turn the game.

Dan Andison came in at No 8 to renew Bridgwater’s hopes, his 51 including three fours and three sixes. But the re-introduction of Pete Harris accounted for him and Bradley Rawles.

Richard Eckley made the final contribution with a quick-fire 19 before being run out by Fred Berry and Burnham were home and dry.

There were two wickets apiece for Farnham, Harris and Tom McCollum.

On Saturday, Burnham travel to North Newton.

HUNTSPILL & District’s promotion hopes from Division 4 suffered a big blow at Kilmington & Stourton on Saturday.

Skipper Matt Counsell decided to field first but the home opening pair set off in confident mood, putting on 82 for the first wicket.

Nick Ward (41) became the first of Dean Adams’ four wickets and, immediately, the run rate slowed as he and CJ Organ took control.

Cameron Heard battled on to anchor the Kilmington innings and was fifth out to the persistent Adams for a fine 77.

After this, Jake Randall took over and his five overs late on reaped 3-20 as the home side settled at 163-8 after 30 overs in a rain-reduced match.

Huntspill’s top three all got into double figures but were out before making a mark on the game.

At 52-5, they looked without a hope but Brandon Durkin (24), Ryan Mogg (23) and CJ Organ (24) added useful scores as they neared the target.

However, they were still 17 runs short when the last wicket fell with two balls remaining.

The defeat sees Huntspill in third place, 10 points behind leaders Crewkerne and all to play for.

On Saturday, they entertain Taunton St Andrew’s A.

In Division 5, Wedmore added another 35 points to their promotion campaign with a six-wicket win at home to Wellington 2nds.

The visitors were put in to bat and the home attack of Chris Major (3-24 off 9) and Josh Burgess (4-13 off 8.2) dominated throughout.

As a result, Wellington were reduced to 86 all out, Mark Salter top scoring with 36.

Wedmore passed their target in the 22nd over, Billy Halford leading the way with 23.

Taunton Deane 3rds are top of the division with Wedmore just 10 points back and Trull 2nds a point behind.

Wedmore travel to Leigh on Mendip on Saturday.
