BRIDGWATER Netball Club team Venus took part in the Somerset County Netball tournament at Taunton Vale on Saturday, contesting the Wyvern Plate.

The tournament consisted of six games of 12 minutes each, and Venus were full of confidence with a talented squad.

They got off to a storming start in their first game, beating Doves 15-1.

Their second game was against Arrows, who pushed Venus throughout the 12 minutes, but Venus held their nerve and got the win 7-5.

The third game was against local rivals, Sydenham Emeralds; Venus took an early lead and kept Emeralds at bay throughout the 12 minutes, winning 17-4.

They faced Thorns in their next match, with Venus winning 12-7, and then saw off Aldon 11-8.

Venus’ final game was against Chalice, who had also won all of their games, so the winner of this game would win the County Plate.

Venus came out strong and took the lead, but Chalice pushed them right to the final whistle, at which point Venus were declared victors, 12-7, to clinch the County Plate.

Somerset Division 3

Mars 41 Highfield 36

MARS’ final match of the season took place on a balmy evening and they took a one-goal lead by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter both teams experienced a drop in goals but Caitlin Howes (GD) and Kayleigh Martin-Haste limited Highfield to five goals as Mars turned the screw.

Sophie Atyeo’s sharp feeds enabled the shooters to give the home side a five-goal lead.

The final two quarters were even but Atyeo continued to impress as Mars came out on top.

The result is a testimony to the progress this team of youth and experience has made this season under captain Becky Kennard.
