TAUNTON Muskets got the 2019 South West Baseball League campaign underway at their new home ground, 'The Armoury' (in Victoria Park), on Sunday.

After a few years on the outskirts of town, the Muskets' new home is aimed at showcasing South West baseball to locals throughout the summer months.

Unfortunately the Muskets were unable to christen the new ground with a home win, succumbing 10-4 against the newly-formed Yeovil Whirlwinds.

The teams were evenly matched, with both pitchers taking control from the mound early on, making for a very close game.

The Muskets failed to get into a rhythm, especially offensively, and fell behind early on.

While there were a few glimmers of hope for a comeback after some good hits, especially off the bat of Leroy Bailey, a couple of early season errors cut short any rallies.

A few late insurance runs for the Whirlwinds proved the difference, giving them their first ever victory.

It was not the result the Muskets wanted, but there were many positives to take from the first game of the season, especially being able to play at the new field.

The team will look to get their first win of the year on the road this coming Sunday, when they take on the Cornish Claycutters.
