TAUNTON Area Cycling Campaign (TACC) has produced a list of what it calls design flaws following the opening on Sunday of the new link road from the A358 to the M5 at Taunton.

The new road runs from the Gateway Park and Ride access via a new roundabout to the M5.

The previous A358 leading to Junction 25 is currently closed to vehicles.

A TACC spokesperson claims a number of "constructive comments" the group made to Somerset County Council have been "largely ignored".

He added: "Now we have another monument to 1980s highways design, which marginalises low carbon transport."

Here are the TACC complaints raised about the new road layout:

1: The old crossing is blocked off. Pedestrians are signed to go left but if they do, they will end up walking in the wrong direction with their backs to traffic. No signing for cyclists.

2: Not clear how you are supposed to get to the temporary crossing between Ruishton Lane and J25.

3: What TACC terms "another Covid-19 alley" to get to multiple crossings at J25 and eventually a new crossing over four traffic lanes to the centre of the J25 roundabout. You have to cross back across it 150 metres on.

4: You have to cross here even to get to the previous spot but there is a link to the old Henlade path which you now have to cross four times and go through two sheep pens.
