A DRIVER was trapped inside his car after it became stuck in floodwater this morning (Thursday).

Firefighters at first failed to find the man and the vehicle due to the length of the flooded road in Bineham Lane, Yeovilton.

Fire control was called at 8.15am to reports of the man unable to get out of his car after driving through floodwater.

Fire engines were sent from Yeovil and Martock along with a specialist rescue team from Bridgwater.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Once the crew got in attendance, the officer in charge confirmed that due to the length of the road the crew could not yet locate the vehicle.

"The crew got to work donning flood suits and water safety equipment ready to rescue the male.

"The officer in charge also requested the attendance of the rescue tender for the wading boat to assist the crews to locate and rescue the male.

"Fire control sent the rescue tender from Yeovil to this incident.

"Once the rescue tender got in attendance the crew committed to the water in the search for the vehicle and the male.

"The crew located the male and rescued him using the wading boat from the water to a safe place in the care of paramedics."

Highways staff and police also attended the incident and closed the road to ensure other motorists did not try to drive through the high levels of water.

The crews decontaminated their kit and returned to their fire stations.
