SCORES of people cycled across Somerset at the weekend to raise funds for charity.

On Sunday (September 27) more than 200 people got on their bikes and took on a 70 mile course across the Mendip Hills and Somerset levels. There was also a fun, family-friendly 12 mile course and children as young as five took part.

The event was held to raise funds for Weston Hospicecare, a charity which offers hospice care to elderly people in Weston, Burnham-on-Sea and the surrounding areas.

David Eccles, organiser of Wedmore 40/30, said it was a challenge to ensure the event could still go ahead in a Covid secure way but he is pleased it was a big success.

“It was a great day overall. We had glorious weather, it was superb,” David said.

“We were worried about putting this event on due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“It was a battle to get the permits and certificates that we needed to make sure we could go ahead with it safely but we got it sorted.

“About 200 people came on the day which was great. Some of our more experienced cyclists took part in our 70 mile course but others really enjoyed the 12 mile family course. It was nice to bring some normality back to our community as it has been a testing year for us all.”
