Wells MP James Heappey has requested a tribute to a Somerset man ben be made on his behalf on the 76th anniversary of D-Day.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has launched its Remembering Normandy Initiative to allow tributes to be laid on your behalf, with tributes unable to take place as they would have done as a result of Covid-19.

Private Leslie Bowen was from Chilcompton in the Wells constituency and Mr Heappey said he is grateful to be able to pay tribute to him in this way.

He said: “At this time of year, thousands of us would be in Normandy remembering the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought to free Europe from Nazi tyranny.

“I am grateful, therefore, to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for laying tributes on our behalf, as they have done at my request for Private Leslie Bowen from the village of Chilcompton.

“We must remember their sacrifice and so I encourage everyone to ask CWGC to lay a tribute on their behalf.”
