THE roof of a property has collapsed after an accidental fire near East Huntspill. 

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were caled at 10.32am today (April 10) to reports of a fire in Church Road, Bason Bridge. 

Two fire engines from Burnham-on-Sea and one fire engine from Bridgwater were sent to the incident.

On arrival, crews confirmed the roof of the building was involved in fire and requested a fourth fire engine to attend, which also came from Bridgwater.

Crews confirmed this was a fire involving a domestic property measuring approximately 10m by 5m with 50 per cent of the roof involved in fire.

A spokesperson for the fire service, said: "Crews got to work in two sectors with five breathing apparatus, 135 ladder, two main jets, one hose reel jet, one safety jet, from an open water supply and a hydrant.

"The main jets were increased to thre and crews were withdrawn from the property due to the stability of the roof structure.

"The fire was fully extinguished by crews using a open water source , three main jets, one hose reel jet, 105 ladder, 135 ladder and five breathing apparatus wearers.

"Crews were withdrawn from the building due to the collapse of the roof.

"One pump from Burnham-on-Sea will make a revisit to check for any hotspots later today.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to Basonbridge Inn for supplying cold drinks to the fire ground on such a hot day.

"The cause of the fire was accidental."
