IT would have been easy for James Want, a full time children's entertainer, to become distraught as he saw 70 bookings suddenly vanish in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown.

But the Bridgwater-based entertainer is one of the many people in the local area who has shown great initiative and found innovative ways to adapt to the circumstances.

And, in doing so, he is still bringing plenty of smiles to children's faces through the marvel of social media.

By spreading the word online, James has managed to keep entertaining and has done virtual birthday parties for children, and even done a virtual school disco.

"Being self-employed, I was faced with having no income coming in," Mr Want said.

"But I felt I had to look at the positives and have started running free virtual birthday parties, where people can make donations if they wish.

"I am offering around 20 minute free shows via Skype, Zoom, or Facebook and will do a general chat too the children, as well as playing a game, singing, magic, and science tricks."

James normally covers much of the south west in his usual day job - but if anything is reaching out to children further afield all while staying in his own home.

"I have done parties for local children in Taunton and Bridgwater, but I've also had requests from Derbyshire, London and even one from Australia!," James said.

"I have had a fair few people who have taken me up on this offer, and it's lovely too see the children who laugh and smile, and get interactive during the shows."

James has also done his first virtual school disco - teaming up with a school, he is able to stream live via their Facebook page at the designated disco time, and the children can dance along in their living rooms and make song requests in the comments.

Having not really made videos for online before, James has found a great outlet and is now sharing a daily Youtube video each afternoon featuring more magic, games and general fun.

"The feedback from parents has been great, and I am happy to do more in the Bridgwater and wider Somerset area," James said.
