BBC Bristol radio presenter Emma Britton was on hand to officially open a new journalism centre and library at Pawlett Primary School this week.

The Bridgwater born-and-bred broadcaster headed to Pawlett Primary on Friday (March 6) to celebrate the opening of the centre and give tips about what makes a good journalist to the young pupils.

The school has become the latest educational facility to open a Jill Dando News Centre, in memory of the Weston-super-Mare-born journalist and BBC Crimewatch presenter who was shot and killed outside her home in London in 1999 aged 37.

There were also a number of apple trees planted in Jill's memory.

Emma Britton worked with Jill Dando's brother Nigel at BBC Bristol until his recent retirement.

Mrs Britton said: "I am a big fan of the Jill Dando News Centre programme as I am so passionate about the power of positive news.

"It was great to talk to the children here who were enthusiastic and asked some really good questions.

"It has been an absolute honour to open the new centre here today."

At the Jill Dando News Centre pupils will be able to learn about writing and producing news, and contribute to the The Priory Learning Trust's group newspaper The Post.

Pawlett Primary School caters for 59 pupils.
