NINE months after a community group saved a seemingly-doomed library from closure and the facility is now bigger and better than before.

And the volunteers behind South Petherton library have taken the next step, forming a registered charity.

But the journey is not over for the Friends of South Petherton Library as new revenue streams must be found.

A spokesman for the group said: “South Petherton library is now much busier and, with longer opening hours, attracts a wider range of users.

“However, such funding cannot be relied on indefinitely and other ways of funding this community asset have to be found.”

The first step was creation of FOSPL, which is registered with the charity commission. That group is now carrying out the second aim.

The spokesman added: “We have already bought new furniture and have started a Lego club but there is plenty more to do. We are keen to have Authors’ visits, buy recently published books, promote book clubs etc.

“Ideas for other activities are welcome - just let us know either in person at the library or on our new website at southpethertonlibrary.co.uk where there is a link to Friends.”

Becoming a friend costs only a minimum donation of £2 a year to join. Application forms are available in the library.

“Even better why not come along to our formal launch event on March 13 at 3pm in the David Hall,” the spokesman said.

“Exciting plans for the future of the library and a proposed Community Hub will be unveiled.

“This will accommodate a larger library and other parish facilities as recommended in the Neighboourhood Plan, and for this the library is seeking more funds.”
