MORE than 20 volunteers gave up their time to clean up debris from Berrow Beach after Storm Dennis.

On Saturday (February 22) volunteers from The Friends of Berrow Beach collected ten sacks of rubbish from the beach after high tides and storms left 'abnormal' amounts of debris washed up along the coast.

Volunteers picked up a variety of items including bottle tops, cotton buds and parts of plastic toys.

Nigel Hoy from The Friends of Berrow Beach said the beach clean was a success and thanked everyone for attending.

He said: "After several months of very little rubbish, the recent storms have bought in an abnormal amount of debris, including much plastic.

"This mainly consisted of small stuff including many bottle tops and bits of plastic toys. By far the items we collected the most were the plastic stems of cotton buds, which people continue to dispose of down the toilet.

"They are too small to get caught in the rubbish traps at sewer plants and end up in the sea.

"We had 25 people attend and collected 10 full sacks of rubbish which Sedgemoor District Council kindly agreed to collect for us. The weather was kind to us. I would like to thank everyone who helped out."
