MOTORISTS across Somerset are being urged to 'drive carefully' - even on gritted roads - after temperatures dropped to below zero overnight.

Somerset County Council's Highways team said gritters were out in force across major routes in Somerset last night (January 19) and early this morning (January 20) in a bid to make the roads safe after temperatures dropped to -3 degrees in some areas across the county.

In a tweet a spokesperson for the county council said: "Please be reminded, even though roads may be gritted, they can still be tricky to navigate in freezing conditions.

"You know the drill - DRIVE CAREFULLY."

The Met Office said temperatures could plummet to -4 degrees in some areas across Somerset tonight.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "It will be clear and frosty in the west tonight, but with widespread fog and freezing fog developing elsewhere through the early hours.

"Turning frosty under the clear skies. Minimum temperature -4 °C."

A spokesperson for the county council said it's 'almost certain' the highways team will be out gritting the roads again tonight but a final decision won’t be made until later today after they receive a detailed 24-hour forecast.
