AN investigation into how a section of ceiling collapsed and injured guests at Brean Pontins may continue for 'some months' as evidence is still being collected.

On February 21, 2019, 18 people were injured when a heating duct and part of a ceiling collapsed in a clubhouse at the popular resort as families played bingo and children watched a show.

A report from Environmental Health Officers and officers from Somerset Control Partnership in February last year confirmed a 40-metre-long heating and air-con duct, which had been boxed in and attached to the wall, gave way and fell onto the floor.

Sedgemoor District Council launched an investigation less than 24 hours after the incident and said it would be "complex" and would be likely to "run for several months".

Nearly a year on from the incident, a spokeswoman for Sedgemoor District Council confirmed on Thursday (January 9) the investigation is still ongoing.

"The case is still continuing and is still very much in the evidence collection stage," the spokesperson said.

"Until we are past the evidence collection stage, which may be some months yet, we won’t be in a position to consider what our plans are as to going to court."

The Weekly News has contacted Pontins for a comment.
