The next phase of the Quantock Road Roundabout improvements is due to start next week, with overnight works preparing for the introduction of pedestrian crossings.

Starting on Sunday, (January 12), temporary traffic lights will be used on Quantock Road and Homberg Way from 6.30pm to 6am for 10 nights (excluding Fridays and Saturdays) while underground ducting is laid.

The aim of the scheme is to provide direct, safe and convenient crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians and include toucan crossings on Homberg Way and Quantock Road.

A longer queuing lane on the western arm of the roundabout will be introduced which will improve capacity and lane navigation for users.

Cllr John Woodman, cabinet member for highways at Somerset County Council said: “We’re committed to minimising disruption and have looked carefully at our options for this next phase.

"The A39 is a busy road and part of the wider key network which makes it difficult to undertake this work during the day.

"Our contractor Skanska will work considerately and efficiently to try to complete the works as soon as possible to minimise disruption to residents and the travelling public.

He continued: “The scheme itself is an important safety scheme that will allow safe crossing of the roundabout and will be of great benefit to local schools and communities.”

Carriageway resurfacing will then take place starting on February 27 using overnight road closures of Homberg Way and Quantock Road between 7pm to 7am for five nights (weekends excluded). Diversions will be in place.
