A MAN has been arrested in Burnham-on-Sea after two people walking on a bridge were struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident.

Police were called to Hildersheim Bridge in Weston-super-Mare at 2.28am on Friday (December 13) after a car collided with two pedestrians and failed to stop at the scene.

The pedestrians, a man and a woman both aged in their 60's, were taken to hospital with 'multiple injuries' which are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police, said a man was arrested in connection with the incident in Burnham-on-Sea but he has since been released under investigation.

“We were called at 2.28am yesterday morning (Friday) after a car collided with two pedestrians on Hildersheim Bridge, Weston-super-Mare and failed to stop at the scene," the spokesperson said.

“The pedestrians, a man and a woman both aged in their 60's, have been taken to hospital with multiple injuries which aren’t believed to be life threatening.

“A man was later arrested in Burnham-on-Sea in connection with the incident. He has since been released under investigation.

“Hildersheim Bridge was closed until 10.30am while specialist investigators examined the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
