A TOTAL of 15 flood alerts have been issued for Somerset and the surrounding counties amid fears of a 'large tidal surge', a Government website has warned.
The Government website warns of possible flooding, warning people to be prepared at the following locations:
Exmoor Rivers
Groundwater flooding in the Cranborne Chase area
Groundwater flooding in the West of Dorset
Lower Tone and Parrett Moors
Mid Bristol Avon Area
Mid Devon Rivers
Middle Exe Area
Middle Stour and tributaries
North Dartmoor Rivers
North Devon Coast from Hartland Point to Lynmouth
River Piddle and tributaries
Rivers Clyst and Culm and their tributaries
South East Somerset Rivers, Upper Reaches
Upper Stour and tributaries
West Somerset Streams
The alert says: "A large tidal surge is expected to overtop sea defences as a result of high tides.
"Forecast high water is 07:45 on 14/12/19 and the forecast tide level is 6.24 m AOD.
"The forecast wind is Force 7 west south westerly.
"Tide times are in local time and refer to the high water time at Hinkley Point.
"Flooding to roads and farmland is possible at these times, however conditions may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide.
"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for the coastline between Gore Point and Hurlstone Point including Porlock Weir.
"Low pressure will cause sea levels to be higher than forecast in tide tables. We are closely monitoring the situation.
"Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued."
