A BRIDGWATER businesswoman has been nominated for a Great British High Street Award.

Sam Carr, who runs The Snug Bookshop and Cafe on Bridgwater's East Quay will now be travelling to Edinburgh to find out whether she has won.

Hers is one of 22 shortlisted businesses.

Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger congratulated Sam on her success, saying by reaching the national shortlist in the High Street Hero category, she should be an inspiration to all small town centre traders.

The awards, backed by the Government, were launched to help businesses and communities find ways to adapt and innovate at a time when traditional high street shops are facing unprecedented challenges from both out-of-town competition and online shopping.

The High Street Hero category specifically recognises exceptional independent business owners or employees who run initiatives and programmes to improve the high street experience for everyone.

Mr Liddell-Grainger, said he was thrilled at Ms Carr’s nomination.

“To make it onto such a small shortlist representing the entire country is an achievement in itself and a reflection of what a landmark business The Snug has already become,” he said. "I wish Sam the best of luck – and look forward to learning of her further success.”
