THE former Somerset Bridge School at Hamp Bridge has been damaged in a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters were called to the school just before 5pm on Wednesday, August 7 after reports of smoke issuing from a derelict building.

On arrival the crews found smoke and flames issuing from the building, and due to the poor water supply in the area they called for a water bowser to help.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "At 5.41pm the fire was confirmed to be out.

"The fire involved a single storey derelict building that caused 40 per cent damage to the entire building.

"The fire was extinguished using two hose reel jets, one 45mm jet, one thermal imaging camera, drag forks and ceiling hooks.

"Police were informed as the cause of the fire was believed to be deliberate."
