PUPILS at Nether Stowey Primary School went back to nature in 2009 as they celebrated the reopening of their wildlife area.

The area of woodland and undergrowth at the school had previously been blocked off, but was transformed by children, parents, staff and the Somerset Wildlife organisation into a haven for learning.

Together they put in a path made of bark and introduced bird boxes to encourage wildlife, after being given a grant to improve their surroundings.

Delighted youngsters helped re-open the area – and immediately went to explore their new surroundings.

Hugh Taunton, head teacher, told the Mercury: “It really was a combined effort and Sanders GardenWorld gave us a discount on some of our materials.

“It was a very good day and the governors came along as well.

“It is now open for the children as part of their learning.”
