A CAR was destroyed and a hedge was damaged after a fire broke out on the M5 near Burnham-on-Sea.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service were called on May 13 to the M5 northbound between J21 and J22 to reports of a car fire.

Two fire engines from Burnham-on-Sea were sent to the scene and firefighters used a compressed air foam jet and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire on the hard shoulder.

The fire also spread to hedgerow and firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

Photos released by Burnham-on-Sea Fire Station show burnt debris from the car on the floor and the hedgerow left blackened after the fire.
