A FIRE has engulfed a 4x4 on the A303 near Ilminster.

Flames were seen pouring from the car yesterday after (April 22) as fire crews were called to the scene.

The fire broke out at around 4.10pm, with fire crews on the scene shortly after.

Members of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service got to work containing the blaze.

Fortunately, a caravan which had been attached to the 4x4 had been unhitched and moved to a safe distance.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews from Ilminster and Chard were mobilised following several reports from members of the public stating they could see a vehicle on fire on A303 near to Southfields roundabout.

"Upon arrival crews found a landrover well alight.

"The landrover had been towing a caravan but fortunately they had managed to unhitch the caravan before the fire developed.

"Crews used two hosereels and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire."

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
