AN historic walk in Tiverton has been named a winner of this year’s John Mejor Award, which celebrates outstanding contributions to the conservation of Devon’s natural and built environment.

The Tiverton West Exe Trail, which celebrates the town’s lace making and architectural heritage, won the adult category of the award.

The John Mejor Awards are sponsored jointly by Devon Conservation Forum and UNISON Devon County Branch and commemorate John Mejor’s 12 years as the first secretary of the forum.

Fern Clarke is honorary secretary of Tiverton Civic Society, which conceived the idea of the trail.

She said: “We are very pleased to have won this award.

“It recognises the months of research and development of the West Exe Trail undertaken by the society, assisted by Mid Devon District Council.

“We are very proud of the trail, which has been well received locally.

“Individuals and families can follow the trail on their own, while groups can gather with a guide from the society to be taken round on a pre-arranged basis.”

An awards ceremony will take place on September 21 at Devon County Council’s Chamber Lobby.
