Almost 200 men, women and children ran, hopped, walked and skipped their way around the 5k course at Mawnan Fun Run at the weekend.

Tbe run, of which the Packet was the official media sponsor, raised almost £2,000 in the process for local charities including Mawnan School and a bench at the local church yard.

Cornish comedian Johnny Cowling started the race through the village, joined in with Heather Ferry’s warm-up at the beginning and, after completing the run himself, presented the winners with their prizes.

Matthew Stone was the first man to cross the line in 17 minutes 8 seconds and Emily Trebilco was the first woman in 19 minutes 30 seconds. First prizes of overnight stays at the Budock Vean Hotel went to both Matthew and Emily.

There was plenty to be won for the younger participants too including Trago Mills vouchers, book tokens from Alanco, Tesco vouchers and prizes from Hammer and Hoe and M&S Electrical.

After the race, the celebrations continued on the Carwinion Playing Field.

Now in its fifth year it was a feast of family fun with much more than the run itself. There was a cake stall and raffle run by Mawnan School PTA, while adults rewarded themselves with a beer from Skinners Brewery, a pasty from Crantock bakery and delicious bacon rolls.

There was a massage, courtesy of Mawnan Smith Chiropractors, to treat tired and weary limbs as well as help those about to take part limber up.

The organisers of the fun run, including Amanda Barlow, Sally Reed, Nigel Gilmore, David O’Dell, Rod Allday, Carmel Gee and Melanie Dixon-Phillip were delighted with the result of all their work over the past 12 months to make the day such a success.

“Every year it’s good to see so many people either turn out to race or just support their friends and family. It’s great to see whole families crossing the line,” said Sally Read. “It really is a super community event and fun for all ages.

“We were really grateful to the patience and good humour shown by drivers who were delayed, whilst the roads in the village were closed for 30 minutes, to ensure the safety of runners, especially young children” added Nigel Gilmore.
