Truro School’s year 11 students celebrated first class GCSE results last Thursday, with a fifth of the pupils celebrating straight A* and A grades.

A total of 125 students took exams this summer and 96 per cent of their grades were A* to C.

Of these, 59 per cent were grades A* or A – one per cent higher than the school’s average over the last five years.

It is a similar story with the overall pass-rate, for which the five-year average is 96.7 pre cent.

Among the top achievers were cousins Laura ffrench-Constant from Feock and Sophie ffrench-Constant from Perranwell Station, who scooped 25 A* grades between them.

These included top grades in short course GCSEs – in religious education and ICT – which the girls took early, during years nine and ten.

Headmaster Paul Smith said: “I am delighted that the hard work and ability of both students and staff has been recognised with another set of excellent results.”

He said the students’ achievements became even more commendable in view of the fact that they had also achieved international caps at rugby football and hockey, carried out junior Olympic standard sailing and fencing, completed grade eights and distinctions in a variety of musical instruments and received awards for acting and public speaking, as well as Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

“We want to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the many straight A students but I also commend the many who excelled themselves to gain well-deserved lesser grades.

“These results augur well for the future and I look forward to welcoming such a talented year group back to school next week, when they will be able to enjoy the newly refurbished Sixth Form Centre.”
