HE'S a karaoke singer by night, a master of martial arts during the evening and a fast food seller in the daytime.

Marcellus Hocking, aka Fonzie, has pitched up in Falmouth to sell burgers to a backdrop of 1950s and 1960s music.

"I was doing it for three or four years at Matalan in Truro but I decided to apply for this pitch at Trago Mills and I was chosen from 25 other applications," said the 62 year-old.

His nickname originates from his younger days when he had a handle on CB radio - but he has also twice met one of his heroes Henry Winkler - star of 1980s American comedy Happy Days.

Fonzie, who lives in Redruth, clearly does not spend too much time idling.

He opens his van at 7am each morning "to catch the dockers", before heading off to run a self-defence class or to host a karaoke night.

Marcellus, named after boxing legend Cassius Marcellus Clay, (better known as Muhammad Ali), has been to America on several occasions to attend Bruce Lee conventions.

He's been an HGV driver, an apprentice chef at a hotel in Wadebridge and once qualified for the regional finals of The X-Factor. Oh, and he almost set Robbie Williams on fire.

"As a kid he used to come down to Perran Sands Holiday Park during the summer because his dad Peter would perform there. I was living down the road with my mum, who worked on the site. Robbie was staying with us and I was cooking something in a pan, but it caught fire," said Fonzie.

"The next thing I knew, the Formica ceiling in the kitchen went up and I had to get him out quickly. He was only about nine."

Ten minutes spent with Fonzie is an absolute rollercoaster ride. His energy and stories are infectious (not in a coronavirus way).

When the c-word was mentioned, he produced a bottle of zinc tablets from behind the food counter: "Zinc keeps everything out," he said.

He says people travel just to sample his double-blanched skin-on chips, but he has a wide range of burgers from Chapmans Family Butchers, chicken and veggie options from which to choose.

After a busy first weekend, business has quietened down in light of the tightening Government restrictions.

He plans to close at 3pm on Mondays, but will be there throughout the day on other days of the week and later in the evening on weekends.

Once you've met him, you'll never forget him.
