A Falmouth charity has launched a telephone befriending service for elderly people during the coronavirus outbreak.

Falmouth Age Concern plans to temporarily replace its one-to-one befriending service to protect the health of the elderly, but is continuing to help guard against loneliness.

Peter Maxted, manager of Falmouth Age Concern, said: "We're here to help because we know there will be more people isolated and lonely during this time.

"Elderly people may not have friends and family to call on and while they are self-isolating we have set up the service to alleviate loneliness."

While the coronavirus outbreak poses health risks for everyone, officials have made it clear that the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

Falmouth Age Concern has around 150-200 clients in Falmouth, Penryn and surrounding areas, but the charity is broadening its service to anyone over the age of 60 for the forseeable future.

It may be that those using the service are housebound and physically or mentally disabled, but the main issue is loneliness.

Regular human contact through their team of volunteers often helps to alleviate depression which, if not addressed, can lead to ill health and self neglect.

Abbie Jones-Walters, deputy manager at Falmouth Age Concern, said: “We are putting plans in place to be ready to continue to fulfil our remit and care for our elderly community in times of difficulty.

"We have requested that our volunteers take measures to be extra cautious around our elderly clients and volunteers, who are particularly at risk from the virus."

The charity is encouraging people to contact them if they become aware of an older person who is facing increased loneliness in the current circumstances who may benefit from being telephoned.

"Please contact the office if you become aware of an older person who is facing increased loneliness in the current circumstances who may benefit from being telephoned or you work for an organisation who help older people who may face a loss of support in cases of self-isolation and cancelled events," said Abbie.
