A number of events and appearances have been cancelled in the Helston area as a result of coronavirus concerns.

Helston Town Band announced last night that it would not be affecting the West of England Regional Championships taking place in Torquay today.

The band said: "Regrettably the band have decided to withdraw from the Torquay contest this weekend.

"With the current growing issue we feel it is best for the band members and their families to not compete."

They did not let their hard work go up waste, however, posting a video of what would have been their contest piece on Facebook.

Organisers of the Coose Trannack Cross Country event said it was with "heavy hearts" they had decided to cancel this year's competition.

In a statement on Facebook they said: "It is with heavy hearts that FTS (Friends of TrannackSchool), Trannack School and organisers of Coose Trannack have decided to cancel the event.

"This decision has been made due to the current situation within the UK of COVID-19.

"We hope everyone understands and respects this difficult decision and will continue to support Coose Trannack in 2021."

The annual running event usually sees schoolchildren from all over the west of Cornwall gather for cross country races.

It is the same situation with a coffee morning fundraising for the Bickford-Smith Institute restoration in Porthleven.

The event was due to have taken place at Rick Stein's restaurant on March 21.

The Friends of the Bickford-Smith institute, behind the event, said: "We are sorry to everyone that was looking forward to the morning and hope to arrange something in the autumn."

Postponed in Porthleven is Porthleven Environment Group's fundraising quiz due to take place the same day, at Out of the Blue.

Organisers hope to reschedule in late summer, or when the virus has abated.

Also no longer going ahead is Ruan Minor Spring Flower Show, due to have taken place on March 21 as well, with the organising committee describing it as a "difficult decision" but one they thought was wisest.

And the Culdrose Military Wives concert at Mullion Methodist Church next weekend has been postponed to a later date still to be decided.
