Helston to Mullion and The Lizard road closed

The road between the Culdrose roundabout and the Wheel Inn pub at Cury Cross Lanes is shut for resurfacing.

There has been better news in the last hour though, as the short stretch between the roundabout and the Cury turn off has been reopened, to allow drivers to take this road as a diversion, rather than the officially suggested one of continuing to Double Lodges just before Goonhilly Downs and via Bochym.

This is the route motorists were facing yesterday, resulting in slow progress along the narrow road that was said to be getting increasingly muddy due to the volume of traffic following a long period of bad weather.

Some drivers were preferring to continue to Traboe Crossroads and go via Kuggar to reach The Lizard.

The work had been due to take place last week, but had to be put off due to the onset of Storm Dennis.

Updating people on social media this morning, Cornwall councillor Carolyn Rule said: "The A3083 road is closed from Culdrose to Mullion turning at Penhale all day today.

"Diversion routes are Mullion, through Cury, down to Wheel Inn, up through Double Lodges to St Keverne road then left towards Culdrose and on to Helston, but this is a very narrow road and got severely congested yesterday.

"I have just spoken to the manager and asked if they can open up the short section from Culdrose roundabout to the Cury turning so that we can use that route, which would be a lot easier."

She went on to add that the problem had been compounded by a "massive breakdown" at the Cormac depot, which meant teams were unable to get the materials needed to finish the stretch overnight, as had been planned this week.

Businesses in the area have been left counting the cost of the daytime closure during half term, however, with one writing: "As a business on The Lizard this is massively affecting trade - as if it’s not hard enough in the winter already, this is a big blow."

The work is due to be completed today.
