Police said that it wanted members of the public to be 'extra vigilant' as a result.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said on Sunday afternoon: "A male called at a house claiming to be investigating a reported gas leak. Whilst distracting the occupiers, other persons have forced entry to the address and a quantity of cash and jewellery has been stolen.
"The offender is described as a white male in his 30s, 5ft 6ins tall, wearing a blue and white hat with lettering, grey knit shirt, a padded sleeveless jacket, long shorts and knitted leggings.
"A suspicious white Ford Focus car was also seen in the area a couple of days prior to the burglary.
"This person may have called at other addresses in the area in recent days."
Police said that it took place last Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with information is requested to contact Devon and Cornwall Police, quoting crime number CR/013105/20.
Note: the incident was originally reported as being in Penryn, but police have now clarified that it took place in Longdowns
