Cherilyn Mackrory MP welcomes additional £23.4million funding for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary as part of biggest increase in funding for the police system in a decade.

The Member of Parliament for Truro and Falmouth has welcomed the news that Devon and Cornwall Constabulary will receive an additional £23.4million funding as part of the biggest increase in funding for the police system in a decade.

She said: “I have been clear that giving our police the resources and manpower they need to keep our streets safe should be a priority of this government. Only last week I wrote to the Policing Minister about some of the particular challenges Cornwall faces with our rural nature and massive seasonal population increases.

“Today’s announcement will help our police do their job with an additional £23.4million funding for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary to go along with the 141 new officers we are due to receive by the end of the year.

“While I have been only recently elected, I must pay tribute to the sterling work of my Cornish MP colleagues in campaigning resolutely for this increase, alongside our exceptional Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez. I look forward to working with them all in the future to continue to deliver for our police.”

The amount of funding available to the policing system for 2020 to 2021 will increase by more than £1.1 billion, totalling £15.2 billion, if Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) take full advantage of flexibility to set the police precept.

This represents an almost 10% increase on the core (resource) grant provided to forces last year, enabling the police to cut crime and deliver on the people’s priorities.
