The team was on its way to the scene when a kind-hearted stranger climbed down to rescue the dog and bring it to safety.
Coastguards have asked that members of the public do not get involved in rescues like this one.
A spokesperson for the Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team said in a Facebook post: "Please, please, please, if there's a dog over a cliff, don't make an attempt to retrieve it.
"More often than not a dog will find their own way back. You going over can be hugely risky to you and your dog.
"If your dog is stuck over a cliff, call 999 and ask for Coastguard. We'll attend and use specialist equipment to retrieve the animal."
The spokesperson also informed the public that they should not contact coastguards through social media, as the pages are not always monitored and this could waste valuable time in an emergency.
In this instance, the person reporting the stuck dog was "lucky that a team member noticed the message."
The spokesperson continued: "Social media is not the place for reporting incidents.
"If you're in trouble on the coast, please call 999 and ask for Coastguard. 999 is a FREE number that ANYONE can call.
"Please don't be put off, if there's an emergency, you won't get in any trouble. You could save a life."
