This year’s British Amateur Golf Champion, Emily Toy, has been presented with an honorary life membership by the Cornish club which spotted her potential as a junior player.

Emily has been presenting trophies – one of which had her name on it three times - and inspiring other young players at the Budock Vean Golf Club, on whose greens she cut her teeth for several years before joining the competition circuit.

In 2014 she was one of the youngest ever Cornwall Ladies Champions and the next year became the England Girls Champion. Over the next three years she won other honours and in 2019 became the New South Wales Champion in an Australian competition, played for the England Ladies Team against Spain and became the British Amateur Champion at Royal County Down Golf Club.

Emily, aged 22, said: “It’s always a pleasure to go back to where my golf journey began and to be able to help and inspire the next generation of juniors. I’ve been lucky enough to work with England Golf over the last year and it’s great to be able to give something back.”

The Budock Vean has been actively encouraging its junior membership and of its thriving group of younger players at least seven have gone on to become professionals in the last four years alone.

“These young players have learnt to play accurate golf on the Budock Vean’s beautiful 9 hole / 18 tee course,” says Malcolm Hooper, former club captain.

“They’ve subsequently gone on to other courses to lengthen their game, but the reason they were able to do that was the basic grounding they obtained in their formative years at the Budock Vean: it’s a real accolade for the BV and the challenges of this course.”

Another Budock Vean beneficiary this week was the golf club’s chosen charity for 2019 – Cornwall Blood Bikes – which received a cheque for more than £5,500 towards their “out of hours” service delivering vital supplies to NHS hospitals and hospices across Cornwall. The money was raised through the year by the enthusiastic and generous support of the Club’s members and players.
