Around 20 people took part in a litter pick at a Falmouth hotel on Friday and were rewarded with a free pint for their efforts.

The beach clean at the Greenbank Hotel, sponsored by Sharp's Brewery, was a huge success and followed on from a Spring Beach Clean in April this year.

Amongst the usual washed-up plastic were more unusual finds including Greenbank crockery from the 1960s, an American football, a lightbulb and a soggy beach towel.

Participants over the age of 18 enjoyed a free pint of Sharp's Working Boat Ale at the end of the clean as a thank you for their support.

The event was part of Surfers Against Sewage's 'Summit to Sea Autumn Beach Clean' campaign which is the largest and volunteer beach cleaning project in the UK.

Sharp's Brewery has supported a number of beach cleans across Cornwall this year alone.

It has also donated £42,000 over the last five years to help fund applications for the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards.

Earlier this month the brewery also turned the tables on the music industry by creating the UK's first 'ocean vinyl' entirely from recycled plastic washed up on Cornish beaches, produced in collaboration with Mercury Music Prize nominee Nick Mulvey to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage.

Ben Young, managing director of the Greenbank Hotel, said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to all that came to last week's beach clean, it was so encouraging to welcome so many volunteers and collect ten huge bags of waste.

Falmouth Packet:

"It was a real community effort, with lots of familiar faces, students, staff and tourists alike all getting involved to keep our beach spotless.

"The Greenbank beach is an interesting one as it’s not the usual plastic items that are washed up – during each beach clean we’ve held previously, there are always some obscure unexpected finds, including wellies, tyres, fishing nets, traffic cones, sardine tins and even rusty old sinks and this time was no different!”

He added: “We are always chuffed and very grateful that the team at Sharp’s are able to support us time and time again. We’re on such a huge drive at the Greenbank and The Working Boat to eradicate the use of plastics throughout the hotel and to do our bit for our environment.

Falmouth Packet:

"Cornwall’s beautiful beaches and coastline are so important to us and it’s encouraging that the Greenbank team all share the same ethos.”

Marketing controller at Sharp’s Brewery, James Nicholls said, “With our brewery situated near the coast in Rock, taking care of our beaches and coastline is really important to us. It’s fantastic to see the public getting together and supporting initiatives like the ‘Summit to Sea Autumn Beach Clean’ and we were thrilled to be working alongside The Greenbank Hotel and the community of Falmouth again to keep our beaches in pristine condition.”
