West Cornwall's MP has encouraged his constituents to be more energy efficient.

Derek Thomas showed his support for energy efficiency, talking about the benefit of smart metres at a recent event in parliament.

He said: “Over 12,000 homes currently have a smart meter in West Cornwall, but there is still so much to do to ensure we all enjoy the benefits that smart meters bring to our homes and businesses.

“I recognise that we cannot address the climate change challenge unless we understand and embrace smart metering technology.”

Currently 12,075 people in Derek Thomas MP’s constituency of St Ives have upgraded their old analogue meter to a smart meter.

Robert Cheesewright, director of corporate affairs at Smart Energy GB said: “I am extremely pleased Derek Thomas MP joined us to find out about the vital role smart meters are playing in upgrading our energy infrastructure and helping Great Britain become more energy efficient.

“We are facing a climate crisis and if the UK wants to lead the world with our commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, we all have to do our bit to meet that goal.

"If every household took the energy efficiency measures available right now, together we could achieve 11 per cent of the UK’s carbon target.”
