Quick actions of staff and firefighters prevented a fire at a Porthleven restaurant from spreading further, the Packet has been told.
Smoke could be seen coming from the roof of Amelies in Mount Pleasant Road at around 2pm this afternoon, with three fire engines at the scene.
Fire area manager Andrew Barrett told the Packet that staff found smoke in the upstairs rooms after being alerted to a problem by the fire alarm.
They called 999 and a retained crew from Helston Fire Station were first to arrive.
It was their actions led by station manager Keith Stringer that prevented further damage, he said.
Mr Barrett said: “His actions at the early stages have prevented the fire spreading further in the property.
“When he arrived there were flames coming through the roof.”
Firefighters used two hose reels to put out the fire, with the Helston crew subsequently joined by crews from Tolvaddon and Penzance.
“Now we have extinguished the fire we’re cutting away plasterboard and elements of the loft to cut away the burnt materials, to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and how far its spread.
“We’re using thermal image cameras to help us,” added Mr Barrett, said he was also working with the owners to give advice on the next steps.
“We’re just fortunate that Keith and the team have kept the fire to a small fire and minimised the damage, which has had a positive impact to how quickly we can get the restaurant trading again.”
Restaurant owner Sam Sheffield-Dunstan updated people on social media, saying: "Hi all thanks for your worry.
"We have had a fire which the fire brigade were called to straight away and put out.
"Everyone is fine and will update you when we know the extent of the damage."
The restaurant has also released a short statement on its Facebook page, saying: "The Amélie's team are so sad to say that unfortunately we have had a serious fire in the restaurant this morning so will be closed for the time being.
"Everybody is safe and fine, just a little shaken, but we will let you all know when we're back up and running.
"Thank you for your support as always."
