With Parliament being suspended this week and a Brexit date just over a month away, the Packet spoke to people in Falmouth about their views on the issue.

Both those in favour of leaving the union and those against expressed their frustrations about the way the process is being handled by the country's politicians.

The division in society is clear – and whilst some are cautiously optimistic about the future, others believe that radical change is needed.

Tom Trezise said: "I just feel like I'm only getting one side of it, a lot of the hatred towards Brexiteers, so it's quite hard to establish an overall viewpoint, an unbiased viewpoint.

"But all the same in my heart I do feel like having a European Union is the best way to go."

He went on to say: "Something radical, I think, does need to change. The point is I think we all disagree on what that should be, and that comes down to technology, the influence technology has had as much as anything; how our mobile phones have isolated us from the world and cordoned us off from the bigger picture."

Susan Ponsford said: "To be honest I'm fed up with it. We voted to come out and if we don't come out we don't live in a democracy. I was quite shocked at the result because I thought it would be remain, but it wasn't. Had it been remain I would have accepted it, but it was leave and you've got to respect that." She added: "I think the EU still want to trade with us because we import a lot of their cars from Germany. They're not going to want to not sell us stuff and we want to sell them stuff as well, if we make anything, we don't make much these days.

"In the end, I think things will work out fine. It's going to be, probably, difficult, but my parents survived a war, my dad survived Dunkirk, and we've lost that spirit of 'we can do'.

"Everything's negative and it shouldn't be negative, I don't think."

Judith Dickinson said: "I think the whole lot is just an embarrassment, it's really shambolic. I think as a country we're just destroying ourselves, destroying our reputation with other countries, and it's just an embarrassment, it really is.

"For the job that I do, I work in the health services, I think it will have a really negative impact on health and on our life here in the UK.

"I think the government should be ashamed, I think it's just a real farce and I think there are a lot of egos at play that care more about their narcissistic beliefs about themselves than they do about the country."

Tanya Baker said: "I think it's disgusting. In my opinion Boris is doing what he could to carry out the vote of the people and sadly he's not going to be allowed to and they've used every trick in the book to stop it happening."

Rob Slaughter said: "There was a vote in 2016, they don't want to adhere to it. It just seems as though they've got a better view rather than the people."
